Set in 1595, the story follows the Bottom brothers, Nick and Nigel, who struggle to find success in the theatrical world as they compete with the wild popularity of their contemporary William Shakespeare. This musical is full of rocking songs, romance, women’s lib, dance, and some naughtiness.
Shakespeare – a real ‘rock star’ ala Elvis or Mick Jagger. Rock tenor voice. Tap dances.
Nick Bottom – struggling writer feeling the pressure of supporting his family. Baritone voice. Tap dances.
Nigel Bottom – young, naïve, slightly awkward brother of Nick. High baritone/tenor voice.
Nostradamus – male or female part – a kind of loony character who can (kind of) foretell the future. Baritone/alto voice. Light dance.
Bea – Nick’s wife who will do anything to support her husband. Mezzo belt voice.
Portia – young, innocent Puritan girl – Nigel’s love interest. Soprano voice.
Brother Jeremiah – Portia’s father – strong Puritan (or is he?)
Minstrel – multi-faceted singer/dancer/actor – may also play additional characters
Troupe – Nick & Nigel’s performing troupe – all male (or women who will/can play male). Various vocal ranges; 1 male troupe member must be willing to wear dresses.
Lord (or Lady) Clapham – local Justice – non-dancing role
Shylock – Jewish moneylender – non-dancing role
Bard Boys – Will’s ‘gang’. Various vocal ranges – these are Shakespeare’s groupies.
There are also roles for townspeople, who sing and/or dance.
